Finally implementing a VariableDisaster.com soft launch.
Comments and new accounts are disabled until the Hard launch.
Why So Long.
I’ve had so many distractions since the site was last live. The site was hacked and I had not put in much time for new posts. It was always more experimental than an actual blog. So I took it down. A few months ago I refreshed the DB and server files as a new install. Now I am forcing myself to focus on progress despite lifestyle distractions and my hatred of WordPress. May it last until the singularity.
Why Now
I am catching up with the intention of returning to web technology full time. Also, my frustration with tech advancements is forcing me to return with the hope of fixing things by building references, assets, tutorials and developing refined thought processes. I am regularly appalled by news blips lacking intelligence or refined thought. My composition quality and style could also use serious improvement through practice. Let’s hope it becomes much more than just a platform for voicing my issues.
Why WordPress
I have dabbled with WP (WordPress) since at least as far back as v2.0. I generally hate it. I find it overall very difficult to use. Improvement has been very marginal over time. Though, over the weeks ahead, I hope to exploit the improved API to create an elegant skeleton. Regardless of my displeasure, WordPress is the most popular web platform on the planet.
Joys
- Vast selection of plug-ins and themes.
- Most popular website platform. Calling it a framework seems to cause controversy.
- Recently updated backend API. I have high hopes.
- Well supported technology. PHP && MySQL anyone?
- Very flexible.
Jerks
- Vast selection of poorly written plug-ins and themes.
- Short on “best Practices” and scattered code techniques.
- Prone to spamming/hacking.
- Low performance.
- Archaic authoring interface and other numerous interface issues. Some subjective, some asinine.
- Unprofessional and confusing interface clutter. “Howdy” = ???
- Poorly chosen default settings.
